Trade Deadline

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW IF THE CANUCKS ARE A CONTENDER…SIMPLY BECAUSE THE WHOLE TEAM HAS NOT BEEN TOGETHER ALL SEASON…
TONIGHT THE CANUCKS TAKE ON MINNESOTA…BUT THEY WILL BE WITHOUT WILLIE MITCHELL…
SO FAR THIS SEASON…THE ONLY DEFENCEMAN WHO HAS PLAYED EVERY GAME IS AARON MILLER…
KEVIN BIEKSA HAS MISSED 36 GAMES AND COUNTING…
SAMI SALO HAS MISSED 17…MATTIAS OHLUND 15…AND LUKAS KRAJICEK 11…
SATURDAY NIGHT BRENDAN MORRISON WAS IN THE BROADCAST BOOTH…
MORRISON PLAYED 30 GAMES WITH A BAD WRIST BEFORE THE DOCTORS FINALLY DECIDED SURGERY WAS THE ANSWER…
THE CANUCKS ARE HOPING HE CAN RETURN BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS…
IN THAT LIGHT IT IS TRULY AMAZING THIS TEAM CAN CLIMB INTO FIRST PLACE IN THE NORTHWEST DIVISION WITH A WIN TONIGHT…
SO DOES GENERAL MANAGER DAVE NONIS MORTAGE THE FUTURE BEFORE THE TRADING DEADLINE TO TAKE A RUN AT THE CUP???
BEFORE YOU ANSWER…TAKE A LOOK AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE EQUATION…
THE CANUCKS HAVE JUST LOST 5 OF THEIR LAST 6…
3 OF THOSE LOSSES CAME AT THE HANDS OF NON PLAYOFF TEAMS…INCLUDING THE KINGS ON SATURDAY NIGHT…
L.A. IS THE WORST TEAM IN THE ENTIRE NHL…
THE CANUCKS HAVE ALSO LOST THEIR LAST 2 HOME GAMES…
AS A RESULT THE CANUCKS WOKE UP THIS MORNING AND FOUND THEMSELVES IN 8TH PLACE IN THE WESTERN CONFERENCE…JUST 3 POINTS UP ON COLUMBUS…
IT IS NOT BEYOND THE RELM OF POSSIBILITY THAT THE CANUCKS COULD MISS THE PLAYOFFS…
THERE IS CERTAINLY PRESSURE ON GENERAL MANAGER DAVE NONIS TO MAKE A TRADE TO ADD SOME OFFENCE…
BUT ANY PLAYER THAT CAN PROVIDE THAT…INCLUDING MATS SUNDIN…IS GOING TO COST A BUNDLE OF PROSPECTS…AND OR… DRAFT CHOICES…
LAST YEAR THE ISLANDERS…THE WINGS…THE PREDATORS…THE STARS AND THE SHARKS ALL PARTED WITH A BOAT LOAD OF FIRST ROUND PICKS FOR RENTAL PLAYERS AND NONE OF THOSE TEAMS SAW THE CUP FINAL…
THE CANUCKS WILL PLAY 14 GAMES BEFORE THE DEADLINE…
WHAT THESE PLAYERS SHOW IN THOSE GAMES WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING NONIS DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO PULL THE TRIGGER…

Pratt! I know you will get this!

Canucks are in a tough spot heading into the trade deadline. Canucks secondary scoring is non existant. Morrison,Cooke, and Naslund have been a huge disapointment to say the least. Their maket value at this years trade deadline would be very minimal. Right?
WRONG! This is a sellers market. More and more it would be tough to aquire a big name to carry Canucks second line. Except word out of Flordia is Oli Jokinen can be had for top draft picks and top prospects.Jokinen would fit better than any other superstar in Alains system. Hes gritty, hard nose, and and has an all-around game like no other. The question I ask you. Would you trade Bourdon and Shneider for Jokinen. If the answer is yes then please read the rest.
Canucks could take advantage of this sellers market and trade off their pending UFA's for High draft picks to land Jokinen.
Considering that Canucks only hope of being a contender year after year is if Luongo signs on, with a long term extension. So who better to bring into town than Luongo's best friend from Flordia. Remember Jokinen was going to be a UFA a few years ago when he took less money so Luongo could be signed by ownership. That never materialised and Jokinen blamed management for Luongo's departure.

Canucks could trade
1st rounder in 2008
1st rounder in 2009
1st rounder in 2010
Bourdon
Shneider
for Jokinen. Granted that is alot for Jokinen.Perhaps too much. But if they could use the "sellers market" to their advantage and get back some important 1st rounders that they would have liked to keep.

Canucks could easily get a 1st rounder and Prucha for Naslund.

Canucks could easily package Morrison and Cooke for a 1st and 3rd rounder from Minnisota.

If Anaheim could get a first rounder for O'Brien last year. With all the shortage of puck moving defencman in the league. Surely some team would trade a first rounder for Lucas Krajicek. Rememeber this is a sellers market. And if a team is trying to add a defenceman and they dont want to trade a top pick for a UFA then Krajicek is looking very attractive because of his low salery and young age.
Oviously Naslund would have to waive his NTC but with the prospects of playing with Jagr,Drury,Straka and Gomez. That would not be a problem.

I realize that Morrison is injured, but its false to say you can't trade a injured player. You can. It's usually only done at a trade deadline. Canucks could also put in a clause that if Morrison is not healthy for playoffs Canucks would send a future 2nd rounder in their direction.

tell me this is NOT a stanley cup contender......

Sedin Sedin Pyatt
Prucha Jokinen MasonRaymond
Burrows Kesler Hanson
Cowan Ritchie Linden
Spares:Brown,Rypien,and Isbister

Ohlund Edler
Bieksa Mitchell
Salo Miller
Spares: Mciver and Weaver

Then in the summer sign brunssman and this team will be contenders for a very long time.
Or we could stay status quo and look to trade for a superstar in the summer.Wow. Trading those 1st rounders will sure hurt alot more then. Boys please pass this on to Nonis. Or at the very least read this to your listeners... Great show! Wally
