Cyclists

PEOPLE…SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG HERE…
YESTERDAY THE CITY OF VANCOUVER OPENED THE DUNSMUIR STREET BIKE LANE…
IT IS THE LATEST ADDITION TO A PROJECT TO CREATE 55 KILO-METERS OF BIKE LANES IN THIS CITY AT A COST OF $25 MILLION DOLLARS…
ALL THIS TO ACCOMMODATE A HANDFULL OF “FAIR WEATHER” CYCLISTS…
WHO NOW BELIEVE THEY NOW OWN THE ROADS OF THIS CITY…
THESE PEOPLE BELIEVE THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO CREATE A “DAILY TRAFFIC JAM” OF 20 THOUSAND CARS…
ALL SPEWING MILLIONS OF TONS OF CARBON MONOXIDE…
WHILE AT THE SAME TIME…YELLING INTO THE FACES OF THOSE DRIVERS…”GO GREEN”…
ON THE LAST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH…THESE SAME BOZOS SHUT DOWN THE CITY…BY STAGING A PROTEST CALLED “CRITAL MASS”…
IT’S ILLEGAL AND INCREDIBLY IRRESPONSIBLE…BUT NOBODY EVER GETS ARRESTED…
WHY???
BECAUSE THE LEADER OF THESE “PIN HEADS” IS THE MAYOR OF VANCOUVER GREGOR ROBERTSON…
A MAN WHO CLEARLY DOES NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF VANCOUVER TAXPAYERS WHO PAY HIS SALARY…
ACCORDING TO THE CITY’S OWN CENSUS DATA…96 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE AND WORK IN VANCOUVER…
DRIVE CARS TO WORK…
THAT’S 96 PERCENT…
THOSE NUMBERS DO NOT INCLUDE THE 100 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE LOWER MAINLAND…
WHO ALSO WORK IN VANCOUVER AND NEED THIER CARS TO MAKE A LIVING…
AND IT DOES NOT ADDRESS THE NEGATIVE IMPACT THAT IT IS HAVING ON THE HOTELS…RESTAURANTS…AND SHOPS…
ALL OF WHICH PAY TAXES AND EMPLOYEE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE…
THE BIKE LANE ON THE BURRARD STREET BRIDGE IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THE DAMAGE THAT IS BEING DONE TO THIS CITY…
EVERY DAY…TRAFFIC IS BACKED UP IN ALL DIRECTIONS…WHILE THE BIKE LINE REMAINS UN-USED…
ALL THANKS TO A COMPLETELY “CORUPTED” POLITICAL SYSTEM…LED BY A MAYOR WHO HAS CLEARLY SOLD HIS SOUL…TO “SPECIAL INTEREST” GROUPS…
THIS IS THE SAME CLOWN WHO BELIEVES GIVING AWAY “MILLION DOLLAR CONDOS” TO THE HOMELESS IS A GOOD IDEA…
IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS THE CITY OF VANCOUVER WILL BUILD OVER 500 UNITS ON THE MOST EXPENSIVE REAL ESTATE IN NORTH AMERICA AT A COST OF $225 MILLION DOLLARS…
WHILE AT THE SAME TIME…NOT ADDRESSING ANY OF THE CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM…
STARTING WITH DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION…
THE ANSWER IS TO GET POLITICALLY ACTIVE…
MAKE SURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD…AND YOUR VOTE IN COUNTED…
THE NEXT VANCOUVER ELECTION IS ONLY A YEAR AWAY…
IT IS OUR OPPORTUNITY TO “RIGHT” THIS TERRIBLE “WRONG”…

Cycle lanes in cities as diverse as London, Amsterdam and Portland have been built over the last 20 years. All of those cities have seen a massive uptake in using the bike to commute to work, and reductions in car usage.
Although the construction is annoying, it is high time Vancouver joined the 21st century and provided a safe , pollution free way to get to work for those who live in a 15km zone of their workplace. If you make it accessible, more people will change to the bike from the car, easing congestion and reducing pollution. Changes will not happen overnight, but we need a plan. at least this mayor is doing something, unlike previous mayors who just stuck their head in the sand.

Maybe after spending a little time in those traffic jams, those 96% of car users will realize that maybe, just maybe, they should try riding the bus to work and stop barfing out all the toxins, as you put it.
Keep the bike lanes coming.
I'm not a bike rider, I have a car, but I us transit and I know that it is often the best, and easiest way to get to and from the downtown core.
Even if the lanes don't get more people cycling, maybe more drivers will become frustrated (like yourself) and they will find that there are better options to their car...including buses, Skytrain or even walking...taking more cars off the road!
Kudos City of Vancouver officials!

I am glad to hear someone against this. I think what these projects have done is create arrogant cyclist who don't know how to share the roads and I don't blame the drivers for getting frustrated. I think this mayor is wasting tax payer money for these 'trials' that we know are not trials. I think these cyclists are msking our streets and sidewalks unsafe for drivers and pedestrians. Since this has started, it makes me get off my bike more and drive.

Dave pratt you need to get out of the 1970's. This city needs to make some hard choices bike lanes being just one of them. Yes its not going to be easy to drive or park in the downtown core. Get use to this reality. Bottom line cars and city traffic have to change we cant continue the way we have for the past 50 years. Yes its not easy and yes we are not happy right now but these decisions are essential to a livable city. YOur head in the sand attitude does nothing to change minds. We have already seen what happens when we just continue to add lanes. Just look at new york city you cant drive anywhere. This is where we could be headed. Ever driven in Seattle in rush hour? Unbearable. Grab a brain your comments are not those of the majority so keep talking like an uneducated republican from the US and start getting in the 21st century. Changes are coming and you can get on the bus or get left behind. By the lame comments I can tell you already made your decision. Does the term Out of touch mean anything to you?

I use the bike lanes to get to work every day, and as far as I can see, traffic on the Burrard Street Bridge is never very backed up. If there's a backup on Burrard it usually starts near Georgia, and has more to do with cars coming in from the North Shore than the bike lanes.

Not all of us can ride a bike. I couldn't ride safely as a kid, how can I hope to ride safely in my 50's. Every day, cyclists speed thru stop signs (I have come so close to hitting them), ride on major roads with kids still on training wheels, and ride without basis safey gear(helmuts, lights. To take transit to my work is almost 2 hrs and I can drive in 35 mins...how many people can afford that kind of time. I drive a fuel efficient economy car at a safe/fuel conserving speed. When I see bikes obeying the rules of the road (as I am expected to) I give them more respect.

Lol, I couldn't tell if this rant was serious or a joke. Assuming it was serious, the rant really should be aimed towards the large numbers of single-occupant motor vehicle drivers. Cut that number down and traffic congestion goes with it.

I was at Burrard and Cornwall today at 5:40pm and there was no traffic congestion in any direction. Also, there are traffic cameras that you can check out to see exactly how little traffic congestion is actually occurring. Don't believe the scaremongers. Don't believe the advocates such as myself. See for yourself and form your own opinion.

Geez. Wake up.

When the city says that 4% of commuters in Vancouver are by bicycle, it DOESN'T mean that '96 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE AND WORK IN VANCOUVER…
DRIVE CARS TO WORK…'

According to the city of Vancouver: (http://vancouver.ca/engsvcs/transport/cycling/stats.htm)

15.9 percent of residents in Vancouver cycle or walk to work (2006 Statistics Canada Census).

41.4 percent in the Downtown and West End cycle or walk to work (2006 Statistics Canada Census).
(ie. where the bike lane is)

Heres some stats about Vancouver from the city of Ottawa:

If you add the total of bike, walk and transit to work people, only 72% of commuters are drivers.

So quit misrepresenting statistics, learn what a caps-lock is, go back to sports and make sure you don't plagiarize anything.

Too funny Dave, I thought your show was about sports, and just so you know, cycling is a sport.

Although you probably feel that your listeners support you, unlike myself most cyclists are too smart to follow your show, and unlike drivers, don't listen while on the road. It is interesting then to note how many took the time to take issue with your ranting.

I found your rant insulting; I ride to work daily, but do not take part in the Critical Mass Ride, although I support it. I am not a bozo. I think deeply about the state of the world and our city, as well as the human condition. I do not tolerate bullying, which you are perpetuating. I am not a bozo for trying to limit global warming, or haven't you heard of that?

Hey Dave, how does it make you feel to know that every time you get in a car you are contributing to pollution that leads to an increase in emphasyma, asthma, and other lung conditions that Donny's children will face at a much higher rate than you or I had to when we were kids? Are you OK with that, really?

I for one, am making an effort. What are you doing Dave? I mean, besides trying to derail people's safety, their access to the roads, and their health?

Today, June 30th, your small mindedness made me turn the radio off. Thanks.

Try doing something worthwhile with your voice.

PS, stick to sports.

I'm pretty sure Critical Mass rides have been around far longer than Mayor Robertson. I've never been on one, and don't know anyone that goes, so I can't ask anyone, but I bet a tiny bit of research would lead to an answer on this.

Or you could just post whatever bulls@#t you felt like without checking any facts or figures.

Pratt hates bikes because he's too fat to ride one.
